Things have been heating up here at Catmint Cottage Street Cat Rescue and that is not just in reference to the weather! During a three day heatwave we have faced a number of challenges, not the least of which was: trying to convince a timid untouchable cat like Bobtail into an adjoining crate so that we might bring him into the lounge room and into air conditioning.
Bobtail was having none of it!! he was not going to move into that crate at all! my first attempt was to put food in there but he knew that story too. It wasn't until we left that he cautiously crept up to it but kept one leg firmly planted in the first one! I hurried back out but he ran back again! in the end when he saw the wand come into action he folded himself into his box and attempted to become invisible. Alright by me I was able to slide the box into the next crate and close it off. Bobtail blinked somewhat surprised but mission accomplished for that day! Yesterday Bobtail was NOT going near that box again! Out came the trusty wand that he fears so much and the thing I feared even more was that Bobtail realised it was nice! really nice!! so he sat lapping up the brush and having his cheeks massaged, his forehead brushed, his back massaged and his intention of moving in any direction we required was non negotiable. Plan B or was that C? a top opening carrier was engaged to collect him up against the wall in the corner and while we continued to melt Bobtail was transferred to the adjoining crate and moved into the air conditioning. . Nonplussed and blinking quite happily it was as if he was asking 'why didn't you just tell me this was what you had in mind?' We thought you would have known I answered whilst wiping the sweat from my face and hair!
Bobtail's partner in crime also arrived at the start of the heatwave. White Paws was picked up from the surgery on Saturday morning in a trap after a considerable amount of vet work, bloods, vaccination, desexing, viral test, several teeth removed and left for the Feline Cat Fairy although I'm not at all sure what she is going to do with them. He comes from the same address as Bobtail and was one of the cats the elderly lady fed. It seems he also forgot to register himself for some basic vet requirements like desexing and by that time the lines were becoming blurred as to who was done and who had not been. The males were not exactly forthcoming with this information and when ever we went to visit they would tear across the yard to escape, tails covering any jewels they may have been hiding. Or flaunting as the case may be! White Paws looks a lot like Bobtail especially in the expression of his eyes. White Paws was not about to let himself be transferred from the trap to the crate either. He was not backwards in demonstrating his wish to kill us !! Finally by evening this second mission was accomplished. I had some serious pain relief provided to add to his food but White Paws was not going to eat until darkness enveloped him. Around three a.m or later. The food was gone by daylight at which stage we staggered out and wobbled around from lack of sleep and saw the pupils of White Paws were looking seriously dilated!! Nice? I asked? Slow blinks in return. :)
What we are Doing.... We live in a suburb with a really bad stray cat situation. Bobtail and White Paws are two males that were being fed by a lady on her property but she died last year aged 102.
We had been visiting when we had time because she was an awesome lady with a great sense of humour. After her death there appeared to be seven or eight cats, some of which we had desexed and some like these two that appear to have been add on's at some stage. They needed to be removed due to new residents and we agreed to help.
The cost for just these two is up to is around $2500.00 and we are not finished yet. Bobtail appears to have breathing problems and we see the vet this week for more information. Please consider donating to this very important work. These are the cats born on the wrong side of the track. If they are not removed and looked after they end up dying horrible deaths on the road or they sicken and die of all number of infections. Bobtail had a large wound on his back, rotten teeth now removed, a flea and worm problem causing anaemia and White Paws had very similar issues.
